Why 3mm Clear Perspex Sheets Are the Most Popular Thickness
The most popular clear acrylic sheets we sell are 3 millimetre thick, and there’s good reason for that. This thickness offers a brilliant balance between ease of cutting and durability for finished products.
One of the main advantages of 3mm perspex is that it can be cut by different wattage machines. Generally, you can cut it with a 30 or 40 watt CO2 laser upwards, which makes it accessible whether you’ve got a compact desktop laser or a larger industrial machine. It’s a solid thickness that feels substantial in the hand but isn’t so thick that you need massive amounts of power to cut through it cleanly.
For commercial laser cutting businesses manufacturing products for customers, 3mm strikes that sweet spot where you’re not spending ages on cutting time, but your customers still get a quality feel from the finished piece.
Cast Acrylic vs Extruded: Why We Only Sell Cast Clear Perspex Sheets
Here’s something crucial that many new laser users don’t realise: not all acrylic is the same. There are two main types—cast acrylic and extruded acrylic—and for laser cutting, cast is absolutely the way to go.
We only stock and sell cast acrylic at Laser Materials because it’s simply better for laser cutting. You get better results overall, and with cast acrylic you can achieve a lovely clean cut by properly adjusting your air assist and power settings.
In terms of finish, cast acrylic looks much nicer. You get a higher quality finish and a beautiful edge that’s clear and polished-looking, almost like it’s been flame-polished. That edge quality makes all the difference when you’re creating products that customers will be handling and looking at closely.
Whilst I’ve never personally tried cutting extruded acrylic (because we’ve always used cast), the feedback from the laser cutting community is consistent: cast acrylic is worth the investment for professional results.
Preventing Melting and Achieving Clean Cuts in Clear Perspex
One question we get regularly is about preventing cracking or melting during laser cutting. The good news is that with proper settings, clear perspex cuts beautifully.
I’ve never actually seen cast acrylic crack during laser cutting—it’s really not susceptible to that kind of failure. The key to avoiding melting and getting clean edges is all down to your power settings and air assist.
Start with your laser manufacturer’s recommended settings for acrylic, then do your own testing on a scrap piece. Every machine is a bit different, and factors like the age of your tube, the cleanliness of your optics, and even the ambient temperature in your workspace can affect results.
Proper air assist is essential. It helps blow away the melted material as you cut and cools the edge, preventing that yellowed, melted look that happens when settings are off.
Should You Leave the Protective Film On Clear Perspex During Cutting?
This is a brilliant question with different answers depending on whether you’re cutting or engraving.
You can leave the protective film on when you’re cutting clear perspex. In fact, it’s generally a good idea because the film protects the sheets from any scorch marks and keeps the surface pristine whilst you’re handling and cutting it.
However, you should take the film off if you’re engraving. The film can interfere with the engraving quality and may cause inconsistent results or even catch fire in some cases.
Our standard sheets come with protective film on both sides, so you’re covered either way. Just remember to peel it off after cutting to reveal that brilliant clarity underneath.
Creating Light Boxes: Laser Engraving Photos on Clear Perspex Sheets
One of the most effective applications for engraved clear perspex is creating light boxes. You can absolutely engrave photographs onto clear acrylic for stunning illuminated displays.
When you engrave clear perspex, you naturally get a frosted white engraved area from the laser. The engraved sections scatter light whilst the clear areas let it pass through, creating beautiful contrast when backlit.
For the best results with photograph engraving, you really want to have a good quality photograph to start with. Get the best resolution image you can—ideally straight off the camera, not compressed or heavily manipulated. You want an image with good contrast so the main elements stand out clearly from the background.
Bring your image into your software like Lightburn and prepare the file. There are different settings you can apply—Jarvis or dithering, depending on what effect you’re trying to achieve. Then do a test grid on scrap material to dial in the perfect settings for your specific laser machine.
For display, you can mount the engraved perspex in a frame or box and light it from behind. You can even get LEDs that shine different colour lights, which really shows off the engraving. These illuminated pieces look absolutely brilliant at night and make stunning signage or decorative pieces.
Irish and EU Shipping: What You Need to Know About Clear Perspex Sheet Delivery
As an Irish business based in Straffan, County Kildare, we’ve set up our shipping to be straightforward for customers throughout Ireland and the EU.
For Irish customers, we charge a flat rate shipping of €6.50, regardless of how much you order. Whether you’re ordering one sheet or a hundred, that rate stays the same, which makes it easy to plan your costs.
When we ship to EU countries, the shipping cost is weight-based. You pay a certain amount for the first kilogram, then for every additional kilogram up to a maximum of 20 kilograms. The best way to see your shipping cost is to add your products to cart on lasermaterials.ie with your EU shipping address, and the system will calculate it automatically.
VAT works a bit differently depending on where you’re located. In Ireland, we have to charge VAT to our customers. If you’re in the EU and VAT registered, you can enter your VAT number at checkout and it will be removed. If you’re not VAT registered in the EU, you’ll need to pay the VAT.
We currently stock clear perspex sheets in 600 by 400 millimetre size. If you’ve got a smaller laser bed—say 500 by 300 millimetres—you would normally need to cut the sheets down to fit. That’s part of the workflow for many laser cutters, and the good news is that perspex cuts easily with a scoring knife and straight edge if you need to trim it before loading it into your machine.
