Here’s a useful rule of thumb we share with customers: you typically need approximately 10 watts of CO2 laser power per millimetre of acrylic. That means 3mm perspex can generally be cut with a 30 watt laser. Since many of our customers are small businesses or hobbyists working with lower power machines, 3mm gives them the versatility they need without requiring an industrial-level laser cutter.
Thinner sheets like 1.5mm or 2mm work brilliantly for engraving-focused projects or decorative items that don’t need much structural integrity. On the other hand, thicker sheets require more powerful machines that many smaller operations simply don’t have. Cast Acrylic vs Extruded: Why We Only Sell Cast Perspex Sheets
You might notice when shopping for acrylic that there are two main types: cast and extruded. At Laser Materials, we made the decision early on to only stock cast acrylic perspex sheets, and we’ve never regretted it.
The simple reason? Cast acrylic gives a cleaner finish when laser cutting. If you’ve ever tried cutting extruded acrylic, you’ll know it can produce inconsistent edges and doesn’t respond as well to the laser. Cast acrylic, on the other hand, cuts beautifully with smooth, polished-looking edges that often don’t need any post-processing.
From our experience running lasers ourselves, we know that the quality of your material directly impacts the quality of your finished products. When you’re trying to build a reputation or create something you’re proud of, using cast acrylic rather than extruded makes a noticeable difference. It’s one of those things where spending a bit more upfront saves you time and frustration later.
Best Colours and Finishes for Laser Engraving Perspex
Not all perspex colours engrave equally well. If you’re planning to engrave rather than just cut through your material, colour choice becomes crucial for achieving good contrast and visibility.
Dark colours—especially black—give you the best contrast when engraving. When you engrave into black or other dark colour acrylic, the laser removes the surface layer to reveal a frosted white underneath, creating brilliant contrast that’s immediately visible and looks professional.
White perspex sheets, on the other hand, don’t show engraving nearly as well. The frosted effect from engraving white acrylic is subtle at best and often barely visible unless you’re looking at it in the right light. If a customer asks us what colour to use for an engraved sign or award, we always steer them towards darker colours for the best results.
This doesn’t mean white perspex doesn’t have its place—it’s fantastic for cutting decorative shapes, layering with other colours, or projects where you’re cutting all the way through rather than engraving. Just know its limitations when planning your project.
How to Get Clean Edges and Prevent Melting When Cutting
One of the most common questions we get is about preventing melting or rough edges when laser cutting perspex sheets. The good news is that with cast acrylic and the right settings, you should get pretty smooth edges naturally.
The key factors are having enough power and the correct speed on your laser. Too slow and you’ll overheat the material, causing excessive melting. Too fast without enough power and you won’t cut through cleanly, leaving rough or partially cut edges.
Air assist also plays a crucial role. The air flow helps blow away melted material and cools the cut as you go, resulting in those beautifully polished-looking edges that cast acrylic is known for. We always recommend that people do a test with their laser at different power settings and different air assist settings before committing to cutting a full sheet.
Every machine is different—a 40 watt laser from one manufacturer might cut differently than a 40 watt from another. That’s why we can’t give you one-size-fits-all settings, but we can tell you that taking 15 minutes to run tests on scrap pieces will save you from ruining expensive materials later.
