If you’re searching for perspex sheets in Ireland, you’ve likely discovered there’s more to consider than simply ordering a sheet of clear plastic. Whether you’re creating retail signage, gift items, or point-of-sale displays, understanding the options available can save you time, money, and potential headaches down the line. At Laser Materials, we’ve been supplying perspex sheets to fabricators and businesses across Ireland, and we’ve learned quite a bit about what works best for Irish conditions and applications.

The perspex market in Ireland has evolved significantly, particularly over the past few years. From traditional signage to innovative retail displays with QR codes, the applications have expanded whilst the quality and variety of materials have improved. In this guide, I’ll share practical insights from our experience supplying perspex sheets, including pricing specifics, delivery information, and guidance on choosing the right material for your project.

Understanding Perspex Sheet Thickness for Your Project

One of the most common questions we receive is about thickness, particularly regarding outdoor applications in Ireland’s notoriously unpredictable weather. Here’s the truth: thickness doesn’t really matter when it comes to weather resistance. We mostly supply 3 millimetre perspex sheets, which perform perfectly well in Irish conditions.

However, thickness absolutely matters for structural integrity. The thicker you go, the stronger the sheet becomes, which is fairly obvious. What’s less obvious is how this relates to your specific project. The size of your finished piece plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate thickness. Over a large surface area, a sheet can flex more, so if it’s positioned in a windy location, a standard thickness might not be suitable. You need to consider the individual project parameters.

At Laser Materials, we sell sheets to laser owners and fabricators who then create the final products, so the end applications vary enormously. The key takeaway is this: don’t just default to the thinnest or cheapest option without considering your project’s dimensions and installation location.

Perspex Sheets Ireland: Pricing and Cost Factors

Let’s talk about what you’ll actually pay for perspex sheets in Ireland. We sell 600 by 400 millimetre perspex sheets, and prices vary considerably depending on colour and thickness. To give you specific examples, a cheaper sheet might cost €10 or €11 plus VAT, whilst a gold mirrored perspex sheet could be closer to €30. That’s nearly triple the price, and it’s entirely down to the sheet type.

The pricing is really determined by two main factors: the type of sheet and the colour. Mirror sheets are substantially more expensive than plain clear or white perspex. This isn’t arbitrary pricing—mirrored finishes require additional manufacturing processes that drive up the cost. If you’re working within a tight budget, opting for standard clear or coloured sheets rather than speciality finishes can make a significant difference to your overall project costs.

When planning your project budget, always factor in these variations. We’ve had customers surprised by pricing differences, but once they understand the manufacturing distinctions between sheet types, it makes perfect sense.

Delivery Times and Shipping Costs Within Ireland

Nobody wants to wait weeks for materials, particularly when you’re working to client deadlines. That’s why we’ve structured our delivery service to be as straightforward and quick as possible. For all orders received during the working week, Monday to Friday, before 3 PM, we generally ship the same day—provided the sheets are in stock, of course.

We’ve implemented a flat rate shipping cost in Ireland of €6.50, with no VAT. This applies whether you order one sheet or 100 sheets. You pay the same price regardless, and we subsidise any additional postage costs. This pricing structure is particularly beneficial for larger orders, where shipping costs could otherwise become prohibitive.

The flat rate system means you can accurately predict your total costs from the outset, with no surprises when you reach checkout. For businesses managing multiple projects or requiring regular supplies of perspex sheets in Ireland, this predictability is invaluable for financial planning.

Durability of Perspex in Irish Coastal Environments

Ireland’s coastal locations present unique challenges, with salt air exposure being a primary concern for any material used outdoors. The good news is that perspex is generally very durable in different environments, including coastal settings. Perspex sheets hold up remarkably well against the salt air that characterises much of Ireland’s beautiful but harsh coastline.

This durability makes perspex an excellent choice for businesses located in coastal towns and cities around Ireland, from Galway to Cork to Dublin’s coastal suburbs. Whether you’re installing outdoor signage, protective screens, or display materials, you can have confidence that perspex will withstand Irish coastal conditions.

Cast vs Extruded Perspex: Making the Right Choice

If you’ve researched perspex at all, you’ve probably encountered the terms “cast” and “extruded” acrylic. The difference matters, particularly if you’re planning to cut or fabricate the sheets. Cast sheets are generally cleaner cutting and more suitable for most projects. At Laser Materials, we generally just sell cast acrylic for this reason.

Cast acrylic is manufactured through a process that results in a more uniform material, which responds better to laser cutting and other fabrication methods. For our customers who are fabricators with their own lasers and equipment, cast acrylic simply delivers better results with fewer edge imperfections and cleaner finishes.

Unless you have a very specific reason to seek out extruded acrylic, cast perspex sheets are the safer choice for Irish businesses and fabricators.

Common Applications for Perspex Sheets in Irish Retail and Hospitality

The applications we see for perspex sheets across Ireland are genuinely diverse. In hospitality settings, signage is the primary application. Our customers create table signs, cut out key fobs, and make room signs for hotels, restaurants, and pubs. The material’s versatility means it works equally well for elegant fine dining establishments and casual venues.

In retail environments, sneeze guards became incredibly common during COVID, and whilst demand has decreased, they’re still regularly ordered for situations requiring hygiene barriers. Nowadays, we’re seeing our customers buying acrylic to make display stands with customer information and QR codes that can be scanned—perfect for point of sale material that combines physical presence with digital functionality.

The shift towards QR code integration is particularly interesting. Perspex sheets provide a durable, professional-looking platform for displaying these codes in retail environments, hospitality venues, and even at events. The material is easy to clean, looks premium, and can be customised with branding whilst maintaining the code’s scannability.

We don’t offer fabrication services at Laser Materials—we literally just send out the blank sheets, and our customers are the fabricators. People receiving those sheets have their own lasers and fabrication equipment. They’re buying from us the raw materials for their particular projects, then applying their expertise to create the finished products.

Your Next Steps for Sourcing Perspex Sheets in Ireland

Finding the right perspex sheets in Ireland doesn’t need to be complicated. Understanding the basics—thickness requirements for your specific project, pricing factors, delivery logistics, and appropriate applications—puts you in a strong position to make informed decisions.

At Laser Materials, we’ve built our business around supplying quality perspex sheets with transparent pricing and reliable delivery across Ireland. Whether you’re a fabricator looking for consistent supplies or a business planning your first perspex project, we’re here to provide the raw materials you need.

Understanding the importance of a robust and resilient interior is fundamental to any caravan enthusiast or professional repairer. When it comes to choosing materials, a fine balance needs to be struck between durability, functionality, aesthetics, and of course, weight. It is here that the demand for high-quality interior plywood comes into sharp focus. As a leading supplier, Laser Materials provides a high-grade solution tailored perfectly for your caravan repair needs - our AB/B 2mm or 3mm plywood.

At Laser Materials, we recognise that the interiors of caravans endure a lot of wear and tear. Whether it's a rambunctious family holiday, the occasional weekend getaway, or simply the passage of time, every caravan will eventually need a bit of a sprucing up or repair. And when it comes to materials that offer the ideal combination of strength, durability, and beauty, our high-grade AB/B 2mm plywood is second to none.

Manufactured to meticulous quality standards, our AB/B 2mm or 3mm plywood is a superior choice for your caravan interior needs. The 'AB' grade ensures the highest standard in plywood, with one nearly perfect 'A' side that showcases beautiful natural wood grains and a 'B' side that is equally robust, allowing for minor blemishes and an authentic look. This robustness not only stands up to the everyday use of a caravan interior but also adds a level of character and warmth to your caravan that is only possible with wood.

Additionally, the thickness of 2mm or 3mm strikes the perfect balance between durability and lightweight design. The reduced thickness aids in decreasing the overall weight of the caravan, a crucial factor for fuel efficiency and overall performance while maintaining the structural integrity of the plywood. It’s a combination that ensures longevity without compromising on the essential lightweight nature of caravan construction.

At Laser Materials, we understand that the sizes of caravan interiors can differ dramatically. To accommodate all needs, we are delighted to supply our high-grade AB/B 2mm or 3mm plywood in generous 1220 x 600 mm sheets. These dimensions are designed with flexibility in mind, providing ample material for various repairs, refurbishments or complete interior overhauls. It is also easier to handle and manoeuvre within the often-tight spaces of a caravan interior, making your repair tasks simpler and more efficient.

With Laser Materials, you receive more than just top-quality plywood; you gain the backing of a company that is committed to your satisfaction. We offer expert advice, assistance, and can guide you on the most suitable application of our products, ensuring your caravan not only looks superb but is also structurally sound and ready for the adventures that lie ahead.

So, whether you're a caravan repairer looking to provide the highest quality service to your clients, or a caravan enthusiast aiming to refurbish your home-on-wheels, Laser Materials is your go-to supplier for high-grade AB/B 2mm or 2mm plywood. Explore the durability, aesthetic appeal and versatility of our plywood for a solution that truly stands up to the demands of the open road.

Laserable laminate is a type of plastic material that is designed specifically for laser engraving. This material has gained popularity in recent years due to its versatility and durability. In this blog post, we will discuss the benefits of laserable laminate and how it can be used in various industries.

One of the main benefits of laserable laminate is its durability. This material is made up of multiple layers of plastic, which gives it strength and resistance to wear and tear. The outer layer is specially designed to be engraved by a laser, while the inner layer provides stability and strength. This makes laserable laminate a popular choice for items that will be used frequently, such as nameplates and signs.

Another benefit of laserable laminate is its versatility. This material comes in a variety of colors and finishes, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. It can be used to create high-quality labels, tags, and signs for various industries, including industrial, medical, and commercial.

Laserable laminate is also an environmentally friendly option. Unlike some other materials, laserable laminate is made from a non-toxic plastic that can be easily recycled. This makes it a sustainable choice for businesses and organizations that are committed to reducing their environmental impact.

One of the key benefits of laserable laminate is its ability to be customized with laser engraving. This method of engraving provides a high level of detail and precision that is not possible with other engraving methods. The laser is able to cut through the outer layer of the laminate, revealing the inner layer underneath. This creates a contrasting effect that is both eye-catching and durable.

Laserable laminate is also an ideal material for creating ADA-compliant signage. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that certain signs be easily readable and tactile for people with visual impairments. Laserable laminate can be engraved with raised text and graphics, providing a tactile element that makes it easier for people with visual impairments to read and understand.

In addition to its durability and versatility, laserable laminate is also a cost-effective option. This material is affordable and can be easily customized, making it a popular choice for businesses and organizations that need to create high-quality signage and labels on a budget.

Overall, laserable laminate is a durable, versatile, and cost-effective material that is ideal for a wide range of applications. Its ability to be customized with laser engraving, durability, and sustainability make it a popular choice for businesses and organizations that are looking for a high-quality signage and labeling solution. You can find our range of laserable laminate here

Unfortunately some of the plywood that we supply won’t be 100% flat. As it is wood and a natural product which contains water so it has a natural tendency to warp. Different conditions can affect it, this is something outside of our control. This is especially true with the thinner 2mm and 3mm plywoods.

In order to understand what is happening its worth considering how plywood is made.

Plywood is a composite material made from wood and glue. There are multiple layers called 'ply' which are glued together like a sandwich. Water content of the material will vary depending on the humidity and temperature in the air. Different rates that water evaporates from the wood will cause an imbalance.

The top and bottom of a sheet of ply will often dry at different speeds resulting in an in imbalance in the internal forces of the material causing the plywood to curl upwards.

Our plywood comes from sustainable Finnish forests which means it has made quite some journey to Ireland. As it travels from Finland to Ireland with all the humidity changes from factory to harbour to lorry to our warehouse and then on to customers.

What we do to minimise warping

When it reaches our warehouse we do our best to keep it flat stacking weights on it and keeping it out of direct sunlight as it inevitably dries out. We also turn it regularly so it can dry on both sides as evenly as possible.

Then we cut it down to size and again stack and weigh down the smaller sheets waiting for your order.

When you order we package it and ship it via An post. Again at different times of the year weather conditions will vary and some warping can occur during transportation to you.

The good news is that we use it like this everyday in our lasers so we have figured out the best way to handle it.

What you can do to get the best results

There are two main ways that you can use to get the best results working with the warped plywood.

It goes without saying that a quality laser cutting machine is the foundation of any laser cutting or engraving business. When choosing a laser you want to be sure that it is reliable and produces high quality cutting and engraving.

Over the last couple of years there has been a proliferation of entry level hobby/small business lasers with machines such as the Glowforge and the Flux Beamo. These machines are great for giving people a taste of laser cutting and even starting to make products for a small business. They typically cost in the €2000-€5000 range.

However once past the initial stages most users of these machines quickly realise that these are not production level and are very unreliable. Indeed many Facebook groups for laser owners are littered with stories of people looking to upgrade from Glowforges to something more robust.

This typically brings people to looking at Trotec and Epilog brands which are high quality laser companies. The trouble is these machines come at a high price. Often starting at €25,000 and going up fast from there. This makes it a big jump up from the Glowforge.

So where does that leave you if you want to move on from a Glowforge or Beamo but don't have that kind of money to spend?

The answer is Thunder Laser, these are Chinese made machines that are cost effective (starting at about €10,000) and which have developed a huge following. The quality is excellent and the support available is very good.

We might be a little bit biased as our sister company is the Agent for Thunder Laser in Ireland. However having owned a Trotec machine first and then looking for a more cost effective alternative ourselves, we came across Thunder Laser.

Purchasing a laser cutting machine is a personal choice, just like purchasing a car. We consider Thunder Laser to be the VW of the laser market. Not as expensive as Mercedes or BMW but solid, practical and an excellent work horse.

Check out Thunder laser today at https://thunderlaserireland.com

Regardless of the laser cutting machine you use - all of them will require high quality laser materials and we can help you with these!

What Is Plywood

Plywood is a material that has been manufactured from thin veneers or plies that have been glued together with resin to form a layered sheet or panel. Quite often, adjacent layers have their grains offset from each other by 45 or 90 degrees. This improves its mechanical properties and also makes it less prone to warping. Plywood is a very versatile material that is used for everything from building construction to furniture. Not all plywoods are suitable for the laser cutter, some parts of its construction need to be done in a certain way for that to be the case.

Laser Plywood

Laser plywoods (laserply) are some of our most popular materials and that popularity seems to be growing. It is a material of choice for both schools and makers alike, as you can achieve stunning results relatively easily. It is also a cost-effective material that is perfect for making high-quality items such as enclosures

We sell a variety of thicknesses of Birch laser plywood (laserply) ready for same day despatch from our Co. Kildare based warehouse. Because we regularly use these products on our laser cutters at our sister company TechCreate we have made sure to select the most laserable plywood possible. Our plywood comes from sustainable forests in Finland.

At Laser Materials.ie we carefully select all of our plywood to ensure that they are laser grade plywood. Not all plywoods cut well, or safely, on a laser cutter. We're going to explore what plywood is and what contributes to making it suitable for laser cutting.

We stock a range of thicknesses 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 6mm. All of our plywood uses interior grade glue, which helps to give less of a 'burnt' look on and around the areas that are cut.

What Makes A Plywood Suitable For Laser Cutting?

So what gives a plywood super powers and makes it laser grade plywood? It's all in the construction. There are three main ingredients; density, glue, and the absence of trapped air/gasses. If these three things aren't up to spec the plywood becomes a building material, still useful but not suitable for cutting with a laser. We'll look at each of these 3 ingredients in more detail:

Density

Density plays a large role in how well a plywood sheet can be cut with a laser. Trying to cut a wood that is too dense can lead to excessive scorching and the need for multiple cutting passes. At best you get scorching and uneven cutting, at worst...flames.

Glue

Glue is a vital ingredient. It needs to be able to hold the plywood together for its entire life-cycle and it needs to be safe to be around/work with. For laser grade materials, it needs to not burst into flames when it gets hot and it also needs to be non-toxic. The wrong type of glue could very well end up causing damage/injury to the laser cutter and also the person operating it. You can find out more about the different types of glue here.

Assembling The Layers

Once the correct materials have been sourced and prepared, the glue applied, the parts then need to be brought together. Firstly, the boards are cold pressed together. This ensures that the glue is thinly and even spread, with the excess squeezing out of the sides. The sheets are then stacked onto a hot press, where they are heated and pressed hard for a considerable amount of time. This ensures that the contact between the glue and veneers is consistent all over the board and that there are no air pockets present.

Air pockets can cause damage to the wider sheet when the material is cut. You can find out more about how plywood is made here.

Plywood Aftercare

When we receive plywood at our warehouse in Rathangan, Co. Kildare, it is removed from the pallet then taken to the shelving where it is stored flat. Once it is in your workshop, it is best stored flat also and not in direct sunlight. If you happen to notice any warping, try to store it flat with the concave side down.
